Griha Pravesh: The Order of Things

Griha pravesh is the first formal entry into a new home, and the sequence is fairly consistent across regions.

Entering. The couple or family enters with the right foot first. A kalash of water with a coconut is carried in, and in most traditions the woman of the house carries it. Milk is boiled on the new stove until it overflows, which is the sign of abundance and is done before anything else is cooked.

The first items. Traditionally, what enters first matters: the kalash, an idol or image for the puja space, grain, and something sweet. Cleaning implements and empty containers are traditionally not the first things carried in.

The first night. Many families avoid leaving the house empty on the first night after griha pravesh, sleeping there even if the move is not complete.

What to Install, in Order of Priority

1. The entrance. The main door is the most significant point in the home. Keep it clear of shoe racks and dustbins, and place a protective element there. Vastu for a Bedroom Shared by a New Couple

The guidance here is limited and mostly practical.

South west for the main bedroom. Head to the south or east while sleeping. Avoid a mirror facing the bed, and avoid sleeping with the feet pointing directly at the door.

Vastu treats paired objects as appropriate in this room: two bedside lamps rather than one, paired pieces rather than single ones. Avoid images of solitary figures, and avoid keeping work materials in the room, which the tradition treats as mixing zones that should stay separate.
