Dhanteras opens the festival, and tradition holds that anything purchased on this day multiplies in the year ahead. Gold, silver and new utensils are the conventional buys, and they remain the most common.

But the day honours Dhanvantari and Kubera alongside Lakshmi, and the underlying idea is about inviting prosperity rather than about precious metal specifically. Which is why a great many households now buy something for the puja space or the home instead, particularly when gold prices make the traditional purchase impractical.
