Vishwakarma Puja 2026: Date, Vidhi and the Worship of What You Work With

Vishwakarma Puja falls on Thursday, 17 September 2026. It is the day workshops, factories, garages, studios and offices stop work to clean and worship their tools, and it is one of the few festivals in the calendar built entirely around labour.

Unlike most Hindu festivals it follows the solar calendar, falling on Kanya Sankranti when the sun enters Virgo, which is why it lands on 17 September most years.

Who Vishwakarma Is

Vishwakarma is the divine architect and craftsman, described in the Rigveda as the maker of all things, the one who fashioned the universe itself.

The tradition credits him with a considerable body of work: Dwarka, Krishna’s city; Lanka, built in gold; Indraprastha for the Pandavas; the Sudarshana Chakra; Shiva’s trishul; and the vimanas of the gods. He is the patron of everyone who makes, builds, repairs or engineers anything.

What makes his festival distinctive is its subject. Most festivals honour a deity and ask something of them. This one honours the deity by honouring the instruments of work, and treats craftsmanship itself as worth reverence.

Where It Is Observed

The observance is strongest in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Tripura and eastern Uttar Pradesh, where industrial areas effectively shut for the day.

It is kept in factories, engineering workshops, garages and repair shops, weaving and handloom units, potteries and craft workshops, transport fleets and by individual drivers, construction sites, and increasingly in IT offices and studios where the tools are laptops and equipment rather than lathes.

Bengal’s industrial belt in particular decorates entire factory floors for it.

The Puja Vidhi

The Day Before

Clean the workshop, factory floor, garage or office thoroughly. Machinery is wiped down and oiled, tools are cleaned, vehicles are washed. This part is genuinely half the observance, and many workplaces treat it as the annual deep clean.

The Morning

Decorate the space with marigold garlands, banana leaves and rangoli at the entrance. Set up a chowki with a clean cloth and place an image or idol of Vishwakarma.

Arrange the tools and machinery around or before it. Nothing is used until after the puja.

The Puja

Begin with Ganesh puja. Then perform the sankalpa, and invoke Vishwakarma.

Offer flowers, incense, a lit diya, fruit and sweets. Apply haldi, kumkum and sandalwood to the machinery and tools themselves, and tie a mauli thread around them. In transport fleets, each vehicle receives the same.

Break a coconut before the main machine or at the entrance. Perform aarti, then distribute prasad, in most workplaces to everyone who works there.

Afterwards

Tools are traditionally not used for the remainder of the day. Many workplaces close entirely, and where they cannot, the puja is performed at the start of the shift and work resumes after.

A meal for the workforce is customary, and in many establishments it is the one day of the year the whole team eats together.

For Vehicles

Drivers, fleet operators and transport businesses observe the day for their vehicles specifically.

Wash the vehicle thoroughly. Apply haldi and kumkum to the bonnet or front, tie a garland, place a lemon and green chillies at the front where that is your custom, and light incense. Break a coconut before it. Many drivers keep the day free of long runs afterwards.

For anyone who spends their working life in a vehicle, this is the annual acknowledgement of it.

For an Office or Workspace

The observance has extended naturally to workplaces where the tools are not machinery.

Clean the desk or workspace. Place your primary equipment, whether laptop, camera, instrument or drawing board, before the image. Offer flowers and light a diya. Apply a tilak to the equipment if that suits your practice.

17 September is also Kanya Sankranti, the sun’s entry into Virgo, and in some traditions the beginning of Vishwakarma Jayanti observances that run for several days.

The date is fixed by the solar transit, which is why it does not move the way lunar festivals do.
