Sharad Purnima falls on Sunday, 25 October 2026, on Ashwin Purnima. It is the full moon that closes the monsoon and opens the clear season, and tradition holds it as the brightest and most complete moon of the year.

Why This Full Moon

Sharad Purnima marks the end of the rains. The sky clears, the humidity breaks, and the moon appears sharper than at any other point in the year, which is the observable fact the tradition is built on.

Tradition holds that the moon is complete on this night, possessing all sixteen kalas, the sixteen phases or qualities of fullness. No other full moon is described this way.

It is also said that the moon’s rays carry amrit on this night, which is the basis of the kheer ritual and of the older belief that moonlight has restorative properties during these hours.

The Kheer Left in Moonlight

This is the practice everyone knows.

Rice kheer is prepared in the evening, traditionally with cow’s milk, and placed under the open sky in a silver or steel vessel where the moonlight falls directly on it. It is left through the night, and eaten at dawn or after midnight, distributed to the household as prasad.

Silver is preferred where available, being associated with the moon.

Practically, cover the vessel with a fine mesh or muslin rather than leaving it entirely open, so the moonlight reaches it without the insects doing the same. And use judgement about leaving dairy out overnight in a warm October, particularly in coastal cities. Many households now leave it out for two or three hours in the strongest moonlight rather than until dawn.

Kojagara Puja: Who Is Awake?

The name comes from the Sanskrit question ko jagarti, meaning who is awake.

Tradition holds that on this night Lakshmi moves across the earth asking exactly that, and blesses those she finds keeping vigil. Households therefore stay up, and in Bengal, Odisha, Assam and parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat, Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is a significant observance in its own right.

The evening puja is performed after moonrise. Lakshmi is worshipped with a lit lamp, flowers, fruit and the kheer that will sit out through the night. In many households the family then plays games or sings through the night rather than sleeping, which is the traditional form the vigil takes.

Raas Purnima

In the Vaishnava tradition, this is the night of the Maha Raas, when Krishna danced with the gopis in Vrindavan and multiplied himself so that each believed he danced with her alone.

Temples across Braj mark it, and in Odisha the day is observed as Kumara Purnima, when unmarried girls worship Kartikeya. Regional observances differ considerably while sharing the date.

The Moon and Moonstone
