Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, opening the five days of Diwali. It is the day India shops, and jewellers, utensil sellers and showrooms record their heaviest single day of the year.

But the tradition behind it is broader than gold, and it includes a lamp ritual most households skip and a short list of things tradition advises against buying. This guide covers all of it.

The Three Traditions in One Day

Dhanteras carries three distinct observances that have merged over time, and knowing them explains why the day looks the way it does.

Dhanvantari Jayanti. Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods and the source of Ayurveda, is said to have emerged from the churning of the ocean holding a pot of amrit. The day is his, which is why health rather than only wealth is invoked, and why Ayurvedic practitioners observe it.

Lakshmi and Kubera. Lakshmi is worshipped alongside Kubera, the treasurer of the gods. This is the strand that produced the buying tradition.

The Yama Deepam. A lamp is lit for Yama, the god of death, in a story about a king’s son fated to die on the fourth night of his marriage. His wife kept him awake with lamps, song and heaped gold at the doorway, and Yama, dazzled, could not enter. The lamp lit on Dhanteras evening descends from that story.

Yama Deepam: The Ritual Most People Skip

This one is worth reviving in households that have let it lapse, because it is simple and it is the oldest part of the day.

At dusk, before the main puja, take a diya with four wicks or a single lamp filled with mustard or sesame oil. Place it just outside the main entrance, facing south, since south is the direction associated with Yama. Offer flowers and akshat, and let it burn.

This is the only lamp of the year deliberately placed facing south, and it is lit for the protection and long life of the household.

What to Buy on Dhanteras

Gold and silver remain the conventional purchases. Silver coins with Lakshmi and Ganesha embossed are the most common entry point, since they are affordable and used in the puja itself.

New utensils are the traditional alternative and arguably the older custom. Brass, copper and steel are all considered auspicious.

Brooms. A new broom bought on Dhanteras is worshipped as a form of Lakshmi and is one of the most widespread customs in the country.

Dhania (coriander seeds) are bought in many households and sown after Diwali, treated as a symbol of growth.

Yantras and puja items. A Shree Yantra is traditionally acquired on Dhanteras and installed on Diwali night with the account books or in the puja space.

Prosperity stones. Where gold prices make the traditional purchase difficult, many households now buy a stone associated with abundance instead. What Tradition Says to Avoid

These are customs rather than rules, and observance varies widely by family and region. Take them as tradition rather than prohibition.

Iron and steel. Iron is associated with Shani and is traditionally avoided on Dhanteras. Steel utensils are treated more leniently in many households, though the stricter practice avoids both.

Sharp objects. Knives, scissors and similar items are avoided, being associated with severance.

Glass. Linked to Rahu in some traditions and considered inauspicious for the day.

Black items. Generally avoided on a day associated with light and Lakshmi, though black protective stones are treated separately by most practitioners.

Empty vessels. Anything hollow bought on Dhanteras is traditionally filled immediately, with rice, water or grain, rather than being brought home empty.

Buying on credit. Tradition holds that Dhanteras purchases should be made outright, since the day is about inflow rather than obligation.

The Evening Puja

Clean the house and the entrance. Light the Yama Deepam facing south at dusk.

Then set up for the main puja. Place Lakshmi, Ganesha and Dhanvantari if you have an idol, along with everything purchased that day. Offer roli, akshat, flowers and sweets. Light a ghee diya and perform aarti.

Items bought that day are placed before the deities and left there through the puja before being taken into use.

Lamps are then lit at the entrance and around the house, beginning the sequence that continues through Diwali night.
